USS Taylor 1982 Reunion

October 7–11, 1982 — Chicago, IL

Pre Reunion Newsletter about upcoming events

Commemorating the Fortieth Anniversary of the First Commissioning of USS Taylor (DD 468)
27 July 1981

Dear Shipmates,

The Third Reunion of the USS TAYLOR (DD/DDE 468) is scheduled for 9–10 October 1982 in the good old Midwest in a suburb just south of Chicago called Oak Lawn, quite close to Midway Airport and easily accessible from Interstate 294 (a map will be provided in a later newsletter). Oak Lawn happens to be close enough to the Windy City to avail of the lively activity that exists there. Those who prefer to enjoy a relaxing stay in a quiet suburb will find Oak Lawn fits the bill. We believe we’ve selected a site that will please you and easy to reach by any mode of transportation.

So, all systems are GO from your Committee’s standpoint and what we’d like you to do right now is mark your calendar for the date 9–10 October 1982 and plan to be with us.

Accommodations have been set aside at the OAK LAWN TOWER INN (in Oak Lawn of course) where if you chose you will be hosted, wined and dined by its able staff which has promised to make this one of your most enjoyable vacations. We have been quoted rates for a double room in the $40–45 range, singles about $35 with a complimentary hospitality suite where we will be able to enjoy refreshments and do some reminiscing. While the program hasn’t been finalized, we hope to offer you an optional package which would include (for an approximate fee of $55 per person) the following:

– An open bar Friday evening for a get acquainted Happy Hour
– A night out for you and the missus at a popular supper club featuring a name band and music of the 40’s and 50’s
– A four-hour bus tour of Chicago
– A cocktail hour preceding our Saturday Evening Banquet
– The Saturday Banquet with a guest speaker and dancing following
– A farewell Sunday Brunch

Needless to day, your Committee would welcome any suggestions that would contribute to a more successful weekend.

So much from this end – now we must ask you to give us a hand. Our current mailing list is one that has been developed by the very hard work of Ed Hitchings, John Kinder, Fred Bowman and others. We would like to add to their efforts and need your help to do so. To assist in this regard we have designated (without their permission we might add) the following area team captains:

EAST — Ed Hitchings – 488 Essex Street, Beverly, Mass 01915
SOUTH — Claude Buffington – 2137 Eastside Ct, Augusta, Geo 30906
WEST — John Kinder – 307 W. Enos Dr, Santa Maria, Calif 93454
MIDWEST — Tom Brown – 1025 East Illinois St, Wheaton, Ill 60187

Please pass on any leads (however meager) that you might hear about to your Area Captain who will hopefully help in pursing these and if you turn up a name or two relay the information to Brown so that the composite record can be expanded. We will furnish the area men with some old names and addresses which might prove helpful in turning up some of our shipmates who may not be aware of our efforts.

One other thing we would like you to help us with – any tidbits that you think would be of interest to the group – such as ‘Joe and Mary just returned having spent a two week vacation in Greece’ or ‘Sam and Nancy hit it big last Spring in Las Vegas’ – just send it along to Brown who will incorporate it in the next newsletter.

We plan to write again in the Fall with complete information regarding final plans – meantime please mark your calendar to be with us in 1982.
